ESPRIT began in 2012 as the sample-based side-project of electronic pop artist “George Clanton.” ESPRIT’s first two EP’s “Girls Only” and “Summer Night” are still considered essential listening for any newcomers to the vaporwave genre. In 2014, when vaporwave was still defined by its use of found music and manipulated samples, ESPRIT released his ‘Virtua.zip’ LP composed entirely of original material. In the 3 years since its release, the vaporwave scene at large has followed this trend.

After ‘Virtua.zip,’ the ESPRIT series was put on hold while George Clanton’s eponymous project’s ‘karakreativ’ LP released in late 2015. In 2017, ESPRIT returned with both the successor to ‘Virtua.zip’ and the sister album to ‘karakreativ’.

‘200% Electronica’ combines fully original compositions in ESPRIT’s classic vaporwave style with chopped & screwed samples pulled from George Clanton’s own songs, inspired by two years of touring with nothing but a Roland SP 404-SX.

About
death's dynamic shroud have always been curious about what we can't see. Tech Honors, James Webster, and Keith Rankin make music that explores that sense of wonderment—emotional, experimental electronic work that fills gaps between the known and unknown. Full of richly textured layers of sound, songs like new single “Judgment Bolt” draw unsuspecting listeners into a place that’s simultaneously murky and neon, somber and playful. You feel a sense of new adventure, with a curious pang of déjà vu. The group was initially drawn to the vaporwave world, producing records like 2015’s I'll Try Living Like This and 2017’s Heavy Black Heart, which took familiar sounds—like K-pop, among others—to their maximalist limits. Since then they’ve experimented with making music in different formations of the group and collected the results in a project called NUWRLD Mixtape Club, which included the acclaimed 2021 release Faith In Persona. Their upcoming album—their first in years to include all three members—finds them further exploring unknown realms, focusing on original composition, songwriting, and vocals. And, of course, they’ve utilized some well-placed samples to help drive the album’s concept: an exploration of “love as a social construct, or as the fabric of the universe, or as not existing.” Once again, death's dynamic shroud work to chart what we can’t see but—more than ever—can feel. To Webster, this era boils down to one salient fact: “There’s more of us in this than ever before.”

In a joint release between karakreativ & Jagjaguwar, the songs that launched the band into the world are back on vinyl on March 31st, for the first time in a decade ! The two record set features the full Small Black LP on first record, while the second record features rarities, unreleased songs, remixes and a 23 minute time capsule/collage of the birth of chillwave in 2009 that's exclusive to the vinyl release. Also included is a full color photobook that chronicles the history of the band from their early LI recording days, through their Brooklyn DIY show beginning to their first tours in 2010.

"Ryan and I would lock ourselves away on weekends in the attic of my Uncle Matt's surfboard workshop/house on Long Island in 2008/2009. There was nothing to do there except get tuned up on vodka-lemonade with Matt and run the dinky Casio through a $5 Radio Shack amp to see how crazy it sounded. We didn't really know the proper rules of recording, and the only absolute must was that there be no real drums on the album as we'd had enough of craigslist. There were no expectations for the songs, except to play some Todd P warehouse shows and then Despicable Dogs changed our lives. 



It's been well over a decade now. Matt's gone, back surfing in the sky somewhere. There was a real spirit to being at his house, with full focus on the tunes for these 48 hour marathons that gave them an intimacy that still feels fresh to me. We originally had made a full record, but ended up sitting on some tracks as we figured out the live band and did an EP instead. Last year, I plugged in a hard drive we thought was never going to turn on again and found the lost music for Desert of the Heart. It had always felt like the missing song from this era, so we decided to spruce it up and finish the mix. In doing so, it just felt right to get all the other side B tracks we had from that era, and turn the Small Black EP into the LP it was intended to be. Most of the other tracks on the second side are things that we'd played live at the little venue we ran, Bongozz, but the recordings were never officially released. Side C has the classic remix of D-Dogs from Washed Out along with some other rarities, including a live version of Weird Machines from our 2nd ever show. 



We found a ton of home tapes going through the archive that we collated into a 23 minute time capsule of our recording and songwriting at that time. Jamming with kids in Charlottesville after a house show. Synth sessions on the roof of Ryan's Bushwick loft. It's a document of that time, outside of the constraints of songs and choruses. 

It was a trip to go back to 2009 and made me proud of what 2 kids with a blown out Casio SK-5 and an MPC in a freezing surfshack came up with!
It's been a hell of a run with Ryan, Juan and Jeff and we just keep on rolling!

Using his prized collection of vintage hardware, the New Zealand vaporwave artist is the architect to these unseen places, sculpting lush sonic landscapes with wind-swept synths, balmy electronics, and enough groove to inspire head nods amid the technicolor haze. “If someone can put on one of my albums and feel a bit outside of the world they’re in,” he says, “then it's done its purpose.” Satin Sheets discovered music’s transportive ability for himself through buying and tinkering with used synthesizers in his bedroom; meanwhile, extended YouTube sessions led him to vaporwave and producing. His self-released 2017 album St. Francis stretched new-age ambiance into sun-baked Balearic lounge sessions. He eventually reached out to fellow vaporwave experimenter George Clanton, who brought him into the fold at his label karakreativ, reissuing St. Francis in early 2018. The album, which quickly sold out, is considered one of the label’s defining releases. Four years later, Satin Sheets is finally ready to deliver its much-anticipated sequel. St. Francis II revisits the sonic universe that made him a star with a more seasoned perspective, conjuring nostalgia while also exploring wild new sounds. He’s also hinted at a later chapter featuring darker, atmospheric rave music. Where he’ll venture from there is unclear, but what’s important is that his journey won’t end anytime soon. There’s always new realms to uncover.

"When I released a cassette of Deluxe Memory Suite five years ago I wasn’t expecting much, I had just discovered the huge mysterious world of early vaporwave and was still doing some songwriting and playing instruments in bands around town. My picture of vaporwave was still pretty fuzzy, I was a big fan of everything going on with 100% which was just Esprit, George & Lindsey’s first solo albums, and Deep Fantasy at that point, I had also discovered Eyeliner and Luxury Elite, and a sea of other projects with Kanji in their name, and I was also listening to some neo electro-boogie, Sasac and Shiro Schwartz. I was aware of future funk but it seemed like a looser thing to me at the time than it actually is, so i thought in my mind that I was touching on that a little bit."

death's dynamic shroud have always been curious about what we can't see. Tech Honors, James Webster, and Keith Rankin make music that explores that sense of wonderment—emotional, experimental electronic work that fills gaps between the known and unknown. Full of richly textured layers of sound, songs like new single “Judgment Bolt” draw unsuspecting listeners into a place that’s simultaneously murky and neon, somber and playful. You feel a sense of new adventure, with a curious pang of déjà vu. The group was initially drawn to the vaporwave world, producing records like 2015’s I'll Try Living Like This and 2017’s Heavy Black Heart, which took familiar sounds—like K-pop, among others—to their maximalist limits. Since then they’ve experimented with making music in different formations of the group and collected the results in a project called NUWRLD Mixtape Club, which included the acclaimed 2021 release Faith In Persona. Their upcoming album—their first in years to include all three members—finds them further exploring unknown realms, focusing on original composition, songwriting, and vocals. And, of course, they’ve utilized some well-placed samples to help drive the album’s concept: an exploration of “love as a social construct, or as the fabric of the universe, or as not existing.” Once again, death's dynamic shroud work to chart what we can’t see but—more than ever—can feel. To Webster, this era boils down to one salient fact: “There’s more of us in this than ever before.”

Pictureplane has made his name circling the outer limits of pop culture in several mediums. The Brooklyn-based artist's gallery works, shown both in the U.S. and abroad, collide familiar with fringe and hard lines with visceral spatter. His Alien Body clothing line serves up a stylized study of symbology, the occult, and societal decay. And his music—beautiful yet heavy, swirling wild strains of industrial dance, gothic hip-hop, and emotive New Age—treats electronics not as artificial, but as extensions of our analog selves. After a decade thrashing the status quo, Egedy is not only kin to makers of lovely dark music everywhere, but a vital player in the global DIY community. He is a proud outsider, yes, but his tribe is legion and ever-growing.

In 2011, Pictureplane's Thee Physical arrived, marking a major leap forward. Egedy's voice was suddenly dripping sex at the forefront of a lush synthscape, while cuts like "Trancegender" and "Breath Work" explored the human body with gender-dissolving aplomb. He moved to Brooklyn in 2012 in order to stoke alt-rave culture from a more powerful vantage before teaming up with fabled indie-rap imprint Anticon for Technomancer (2015), an LP about the blurring line between ourselves and our machines. Along the way, Egedy's toured with everyone from Crystal Castles and Major Lazer to the Faint and Gang of Four. He has remixed Lil B; been remixed by Grimes; collaborated with bands (Prayers) and SoundCloud stars (Goth Boi Clique)
